Large Oak Removal at a DeLand Apartment Community

Large Oak Removal at a DeLand Apartment Community

This DeLand job centered on a huge multi-trunk live oak growing right in the courtyard of a two-story apartment community, its canopy spreading over the brick and gray-sided buildings and the parking lot below. The before photo shows the full scale of it: a broad trunk splitting into several massive leaders, Spanish moss trailing from the upper limbs, and branches reaching well past the rooflines and across the cars parked underneath. DeLand sits in Volusia County and is known for these enormous mature oaks, the same kind that shade the historic streets off Woodland Boulevard, and this one had simply outgrown a tight residential property. We taped off the work zone with caution tape and cones, set the perimeter so residents and vehicles stayed clear, and assessed every leader for lean and decay before climbing. Removing a tree of this mass in a lived-in complex is a planning job as much as a cutting job. There is no room for error when buildings, stairwells, and parked cars sit within feet of every limb. Our crew staged the equipment and rigging so each piece had a clear, controlled path down to the ground rather than swinging anywhere near the units.

The in-progress photos show how we took it apart from the top down. We brought in an articulating boom lift, the orange JLG visible reaching up into the canopy, so a climber in a hi-viz helmet could work the high limbs without ever putting weight on weak wood. Working off the lift, we cut the moss-laden lateral branches first, dropping them into the open courtyard where a groundsman in a green hard hat staged each piece. You can see fresh white cut faces stepping down the trunk as we reduced the leaders one at a time, then took the main stems down to a tall spar. Another frame shows the spar cut down further with the boom repositioned and our chip truck waiting at the curb. This is methodical, piece-by-piece removal: relieve the canopy, shorten the leaders, then bring the trunk down in sections small enough to control. Keeping the lift on stable ground and the drop zone clear meant the brick stairwells, the windows, and the residents' cars stayed untouched the entire time. A tree this size next to occupied apartments demands that kind of discipline, and our crew has been removing oaks like it around DeLand for years.

The wood from a tree like this is genuinely heavy, and the trunk photos make that plain. We bucked the lower trunk and leaders into thick rounds, the reddish heartwood and pale sapwood bright on every cut face, and loaded them onto our flatbed dump truck stacked with rounds, brush, and moss; you can read the DeLand lettering on the tailgate. The after frame shows the spar reduced to a low stump with the canopy gone, the courtyard opened up to sky, and the buildings finally clear of the limbs that had been crowding them. We hauled the rounds and chipped the brush rather than leaving piles for the property manager to deal with, and we raked the drop zone so residents could use the lot and walkways again. Big oak removals are exactly what our crew is built for, whether it is storm work or a hazard tree that has simply gotten too large for its spot. We have been in the trade since 1996, and a busy apartment community is one of the most demanding settings to work in safely. The complex got its courtyard back, clean and clear, with the hazard fully removed.
